Early Life

Johannes Ockeghem was a prominent Franco-Flemish composer and singer of early Renaissance music, believed to have been born in the Walloon city of Saint-Ghislain, in the Burgundian Netherlands, now part of Belgium. His exact birthdate remains uncertain, with estimates ranging from 1410 to 1430. The earlier date is suggested by his possible acquaintance with the composer Binchois, and references in Ockeghem's lament for Binchois upon his death in 1460 provide some biographical context. The spelling of Ockeghem's name has varied over time, with "Okeghem" being the most common in 15th-century sources.

Career

Ockeghem's career flourished during a pivotal time in music history, as he became a leading composer between the renowned Guillaume Du Fay and Josquin des Prez. He was a significant figure in the early Franco-Flemish School and was known for his innovative compositions, including 14 masses, five motets, and 21 chansons. His Missa pro Defunctis is particularly notable as it is the earliest surviving polyphonic Requiem mass. Ockeghem's works were preserved in various manuscripts, including the Chigi codex, which dates back to around 1500, showcasing his influence on the music of his time.

Despite a limited output relative to his long career, Ockeghem's music has had a lasting impact.
