Early Life
John Roger Stephens, known professionally as John Legend, was born on December 28, 1978, in Springfield, Ohio. He is the second of four children in a family where music was a significant part of life; his mother directed the church choir, and his father was a drummer. Legend began playing the piano at the age of four and was performing with his church choir by age seven. He excelled academically, skipping two grades and graduating as salutatorian from North High School. He later attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he led the co-ed a cappella group, the Counterparts, and gained recognition for his vocal talents.
Career
After graduating, Legend worked as a management consultant while simultaneously pursuing his music career. He released his first two albums independently before being introduced to Kanye West in 2001. Signing with West's GOOD Music, he adopted the stage name "John Legend" and released his debut album, "Get Lifted," in 2004. The album featured the hit single "Ordinary People" and achieved double platinum status. Over the years, Legend has released several successful albums, including "Once Again," "Evolver," and "Darkness and Light," showcasing his unique blend of soul, pop, and contemporary R&B.
Personal Life
John Legend met model Chrissy Teigen in 2006 during the filming of his music video for "Stereo." They became engaged in 2011 and married in 2013, with Legend dedicating his song "All of Me" to her. The couple has four children, with their first three conceived via in vitro fertilization and their fourth through surrogacy. Legend is also known for his philanthropic efforts, including his Show Me Campaign, which focuses on sustainable development and education. He has been politically active, endorsing Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
