John Michael Talbot was born on May 8, 1954, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, into a Methodist family with a rich musical background. He began learning to play the guitar at a young age and, by the age of 15, had dropped out of school to perform as a guitarist for Mason Proffit, a country folk-rock band he formed with his older brother, Terry.

He and his brother joined the Jesus movement, recording the album "Reborn," which was later re-released by Sparrow Records. In 1971, he married his first wife, Nancy. His conversion to Catholicism in 1978 and subsequent studies at a Franciscan center deeply influenced his music, leading to the creation of albums like "The Lord's Supper" (1979) and "Come to the Quiet" (1980). Over the years, he became the best-selling artist in the history of Sparrow Records, known for his contemporary Christian music.

In addition to his music career, Talbot founded a monastic community called the Brothers and Sisters of Charity and established a house of prayer known as "The Little Portion."
