Биография
Early Life
John Newton was born on August 4, 1725, in Wapping, London, to John Newton the Elder, a shipmaster, and Elizabeth Scatliff. His mother, a Nonconformist, passed away from tuberculosis when he was just six years old. After spending two years at a boarding school, Newton joined his father at sea, embarking on six voyages before his father retired in 1742. Instead of following his father's plans for him to work on a sugarcane plantation in Jamaica, Newton signed on with a merchant ship bound for the Mediterranean.
Naval Service and Career
In 1743, Newton was pressed into the Royal Navy, where he served as a midshipman aboard HMS Harwich. After a failed attempt to desert, he faced punishment and humiliation, which led him to contemplate drastic actions. However, he eventually transferred to the slave ship Pegasus, marking the beginning of his involvement in the slave trade. Despite his early life as a sailor and slave trader, Newton underwent a significant transformation, becoming an evangelical Anglican cleric and a prominent abolitionist.
Marriage and Family
On February 12, 1750, Newton married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Catlett, at St. Margaret's Church in Rochester. He later adopted his two orphaned nieces, Elizabeth Cunningham and Eliza Catlett, and his niece Alys Newton married a prince from India.
Legacy
Newton is best known for his contributions to hymnody, particularly for writing the beloved hymns "Amazing Grace" and "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken." His life journey from a slave trader to a vocal abolitionist and clergyman has left a lasting impact on both music and social justice, earning him a place in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
