Early Life

John Zorn was born on September 2, 1953, in Utopia, Queens, New York. Raised in a musically rich environment, his mother, Vera, enjoyed classical and world music, while his father, Henry, had a passion for jazz and country music. Zorn's early exposure to diverse musical genres, including doo-wop and rock and roll from his older brother, shaped his eclectic taste. He studied piano, guitar, and flute at the United Nations International School and later taught himself orchestration and counterpoint.
