Johnnie Ray

Early Life

John Alvin Ray was born on January 10, 1927, in Dallas, Oregon, to Hazel and Elmer Ray. He grew up on a farm and began playing the piano at the tender age of three, later singing in the local church choir. At 13, a mishap during a Boy Scout ritual left him deaf in his left ear, a condition that would shape his emotional connection to music and performance. After the family moved to Portland during World War II, Ray worked various jobs while honing his musical talents in local clubs.

Career

Ray's professional journey began at 15 when he sang on a Portland radio station. His unique rhythm-based singing style drew inspiration from rhythm singers like Kay Starr and LaVern Baker. After relocating to Detroit, he gained popularity at the Flame Show Bar Talent Club, where he caught the attention of record executives. His breakthrough came with Okeh Records, leading to a series of successful albums and hits throughout the 1950s, including "Cry" and "I Cry For You." Critics hailed him as a precursor to rock and roll, with Tony Bennett dubbing him the "father of rock and roll."

Personal Life

Ray's personal life was marked by complexity, including a marriage to Marilyn Morrison in 1952, which ended in divorce two years later. Despite his fame, rumors about his sexuality circulated, particularly following an arrest in 1951 for soliciting an undercover officer. His relationships and experiences influenced his music and stage presence, contributing to his legacy as a pioneering figure in pop music.
