Kaoma

Formation

Kaoma, a French-Brazilian pop group, was formed in 1989 and quickly became a significant force in the music scene, particularly known for popularizing the lambada genre in Europe. The group was led by the charismatic lead vocalist Loalwa Braz, alongside members Michel Abihssira on percussion, Jacky Arconte on guitar, Jean-Claude Bonaventure on keyboards, Roger Dru on bass, and Fania providing additional vocals.

Breakthrough

The band's breakthrough came with the release of their iconic single "Lambada" in the summer of 1989. This track not only topped charts in numerous countries but also became synonymous with the lambada dance craze. The song was a cover of the 1986 hit "Chorando Se Foi" by Márcia Ferreira, which led to legal disputes over songwriting credits. Despite this controversy, Kaoma's debut album, "Worldbeat," released in the same year, achieved worldwide success, solidifying their place in music history. The group continued to release popular singles, including "Dançando Lambada" and "Mélodie d'amour," although none matched the monumental success of their debut.

Legacy

Kaoma's influence on the lambada genre and their contributions to pop music were recognized at the 1990 Lo Nuestro Awards, where they won two awards for Pop Group of the Year and New Pop Artist of the Year. The band remained active until their disbandment in 1999, leaving behind a legacy marked by their vibrant sound and danceable rhythms, which continue to resonate in the world of Latin music today.
