Kim Gordon

Early Life

Kim Althea Gordon was born on April 28, 1953, in Rochester, New York. She was the second child of Althea and Calvin Wayne Gordon, a sociology professor. At the age of five, her family moved to Los Angeles, California, where her father took a position at UCLA. Growing up, Gordon attended a progressive elementary school that emphasized hands-on learning, which influenced her creative development.

Career

Gordon is best known as a co-founding member of the influential alternative rock band Sonic Youth, formed in 1981 with Thurston Moore. The couple married in 1984, and Sonic Youth released six albums on independent labels before the 1990s, followed by nine studio albums with DGC Records, starting with "Goo" in 1990. In addition to her work with Sonic Youth, she was a founding member of the musical project Free Kitten, formed in 1993. Gordon's artistry is characterized by her contralto vocal range and experimental guitar work, which has been described as free-form. Despite her significant contributions to music, she has expressed feeling like an outsider in the music scene.
