Formation

Kool & the Gang, an iconic American R&B, soul, and funk band, was formed in 1964 in Jersey City, New Jersey. The original lineup consisted of brothers Robert "Kool" Bell and Ronald Bell, along with Dennis "D.T." Thomas, Robert "Spike" Mickens, George "Funky" Brown, Woodrow "Woody" Sparrow, and Ricky Westfield. Initially known as the Jazziacs, the group began as an instrumental jazz and soul ensemble, performing at local venues and gaining experience by backing other artists. They underwent several name changes before settling on Kool & the Gang and signing with De-Lite Records in 1969.

The band's self-titled debut album, "Kool and the Gang," was released in 1969, marking the beginning of their successful career.
