Lacrimosa

Formation

Lacrimosa, a Swiss gothic metal band, was formed in November 1990 by Tilo Wolff, who recorded a demo tape titled "Clamor". Unable to secure a record deal, he established his own label, Hall of Sermon, in 1991, and released the debut album "Angst" under the name Lacrimosa. The band adopted a harlequin logo that has since adorned their album covers.

Lineup and Key Releases

In 1994, Finnish musician Anne Nurmi joined Lacrimosa as a permanent member, contributing her own compositions in both Finnish and English. The band's commercial breakthrough came with the album "Elodia" in 1999, which reached number 12 on the German album charts and featured a collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra. This marked a significant shift in their sound, leading to subsequent albums like "Fassade" (2001) and "Echos" (2003), which continued to explore orchestral elements in their music.

Recent Developments

Lacrimosa has maintained their independence by reclaiming rights to their back catalogue in 2008. Their latest album, "Lament," released in March 2025, achieved the band's highest chart position since "Elodia," reaching number 7 in Germany. The band has a strong following in Latin America and China, where they frequently perform sold-out concerts. Their unique blend of metal with orchestral arrangements has solidified their place in the gothic metal scene, making them one of the longest-running self-released acts in the genre.
