Early Life

Laura Ilene Benanti was born in New York City to a family deeply rooted in the performing arts. Her mother, Linda Wonneberger, was a vocal coach and former actress, while her father, Martin Vidnovic, was a Broadway actor and singer. After her parents' divorce, she moved to Kinnelon, New Jersey, with her mother and stepfather, Salvatore Benanti, a psychotherapist. From a young age, Laura exhibited a serious demeanor and a profound interest in musical theatre, particularly drawn to the works of Stephen Sondheim. Despite her parents' reluctance to let her audition for professional theatre, she participated in various high school productions, earning accolades for her performances.

Benanti's professional journey began in 1998 when she was cast in a Broadway revival of "The Sound of Music".
