Line Renaud

Early Life

Line Renaud was born on July 2, 1928, in Pont-de-Nieppe, France. Growing up in a musical family, her mother worked as a shorthand typist while her father, a truck driver during the week, played the trumpet in a local brass band on weekends. Renaud's talent emerged early; at just seven years old, she won an amateur singing competition. During World War II, her father was away for five years, and she was raised by her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, often singing for soldiers at her grandmother's café in Armentières.

Career

Renaud's professional journey began when she auditioned at the Conservatoire de Lille, performing songs by the renowned composer Louis "Loulou" Gasté. This led to her debut on Radio Luxembourg and a contract with Pathe Marconi, where she recorded the hit "Ma Cabane au Canada," which won the Grand Prix du Disque. Her career flourished as she toured Europe and Africa, performed at the Moulin Rouge, and appeared on American television shows, including The Bob Hope Show. Renaud's versatility allowed her to adapt American songs into French, and she enjoyed a successful run in Las Vegas from 1963 to 1965.

AIDS Activism

Beyond her music career, Renaud is known for her activism against AIDS. In 1985, she founded the Association of Artists Against AIDS, organizing televised events to raise funds for AIDS research in France. Her commitment to the cause continued into the 2000s, where she publicly condemned statements made by Pope Benedict XVI regarding condom use and AIDS.

Personal Life

In 1945, Renaud moved to Paris, where she began her career in the Folies Belleville and met her mentor, Gasté, whom she married in 1950. They remained together until his passing in 1995. Renaud's life has been marked by her artistic achievements and her dedication to social causes, making her a beloved figure in French culture.
