Early Life

María Dolores "Lola" Flores Ruiz was born on January 21, 1923, in Spain. She was the daughter of Pedro Flores Pinto and Rosario Ruiz Rodríguez, who influenced her early artistic inclinations. Lola learned to dance from María Pantoja and developed her understanding of flamenco with Sebastián Nuñez. At just 16, she made her debut with Custodia Romero's company at the Villamarta Theatre in Jerez de la Frontera, marking the beginning of her illustrious career.

Career

Lola Flores quickly rose to fame after moving to Madrid, where she signed a groundbreaking contract worth 6 million pesetas in the 1950s, a record at the time. Her career flourished as she toured Latin America, captivating audiences with her unique blend of copla, flamenco, and ranchera music. In 1958, she married Antonio González el Pescaílla, a gypsy guitarist, and together they had three children, all of whom followed in her artistic footsteps. Lola became a cultural icon, celebrated for her contributions to Spanish music and her embodiment of the Gypsy spirit, despite identifying as "paya" or non-gypsy.

Legacy

Lola Flores passed away on May 16, 1995, at the age of 72 due to breast cancer. Her death was a profound loss for the Spanish arts community, and her son, Antonio Flores, tragically took his own life shortly after. Lola's legacy endures through her music and the impact she had on future generations of artists. In 2007, her life was commemorated in the biopic "Lola, la película," which explored her early years and celebrated her contributions to Spanish culture.
