Биография

Early Life

Lorenzo Da Ponte, born Emanuele Conegliano on March 10, 1749, in Ceneda, in the Republic of Venice (now Vittorio Veneto, Italy), was the eldest of three sons in a Jewish family. In 1764, his father converted the family to Roman Catholicism, allowing Emanuele to take the name Lorenzo Da Ponte from the bishop who baptized him. He studied at the Ceneda seminary and later at Portogruaro, where he became a Professor of Literature and was ordained a priest in 1773. Despite his clerical duties, Da Ponte led a tumultuous life, engaging in affairs and facing a trial for public concubinage in 1779, which resulted in his banishment from Venice.

Career

In 1805, Da Ponte emigrated to the United States, initially settling in New York City before moving to Sunbury, Pennsylvania. He dabbled in various ventures, including running a grocery store and teaching Italian. Eventually, he returned to New York, where he opened a bookstore and became the first professor of Italian literature at Columbia College. Da Ponte is best known for his work as a librettist, having penned the libretti for 28 operas by 11 composers, including three of Mozart's masterpieces: "The Marriage of Figaro," "Don Giovanni," and "Così fan tutte." He introduced opera to America, notably producing the first full performance of "Don Giovanni" in 1826.

Legacy

At the age of 84, Da Ponte founded the Italian Opera House in New York City, the first purpose-built opera theater in the U.S., although it only lasted two seasons due to financial difficulties. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1828 and continued to influence the American music scene until his death on August 17, 1838. Da Ponte's contributions to opera and literature have left a lasting impact, bridging European and American cultural landscapes.
