Lotte Lenya

Early Life

Lotte Lenya was born on October 18, 1898, in Vienna, Austria, to Catholic working-class parents. She began her artistic journey in 1914, studying in Zürich before taking her first job at the Schauspielhaus. In 1921, she moved to Berlin, where she sought work and adopted the stage name Lotte Lenja. It was in Berlin that she would meet her future husband, composer Kurt Weill, through a mutual acquaintance in 1924.

Career

Lenya's career took off when she was cast as Jenny in the first performance of "The Threepenny Opera" (Die Dreigroschenoper) in 1928, marking her breakthrough role. She became a prominent figure in the German-speaking and classical music world, particularly known for her performances of Weill's songs. With the rise of Nazism, Lenya left Germany in 1933, moving to Paris and later settling in New York City in 1935. She won a Tony Award in 1956 for her role in the English version of "The Threepenny Opera," making history as the only off-Broadway performance to receive such an honor. Throughout her career, she recorded numerous albums, including "Lotte Lenya singt Kurt Weill" and "The Collector's Three Penny Opera."

Personal Life

Lenya's personal life was marked by her tumultuous relationship with Weill; they married in 1926, divorced in 1933, and remarried in 1937. She had several notable affairs, including with artists like Max Ernst and Paul Green. After Weill's death in 1950, she married twice more, including to George Davis, an editor, and Russell Detwiler, an artist. Lenya's life was filled with artistic collaborations and personal challenges, including the loss of her husbands and her own struggles with aging and vocal limitations.

Legacy

Lotte Lenya's influence extends beyond her performances; she founded the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music to promote her late husband's work. Her legacy is celebrated through various tributes, including the Lotte Lenya Competition, which recognizes young talent in musical theater. She is also remembered for her role in the film "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone," which earned her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. Lenya's contributions to music and theater continue to inspire artists today.
