Early Life

Lucille Frances Lawless, known as Lucy Lawless, was born in the Auckland suburb of Mount Albert, New Zealand, into a large Irish Catholic family. The fifth of six siblings, she was raised by her teacher mother, Julie Ryan, and her father, Frank Ryan, who served as the mayor of Mount Albert. Lawless's passion for performance began early; she starred in her first musical at age 10 and pursued acting during her secondary education. After attending Marist College in Auckland, she briefly studied languages at Auckland University before embarking on a journey through Europe and Australia at 18 with her future husband, Garth Lawless.

Career

Lawless's career took off with her television debut in the New Zealand sketch-comedy series, Funny Business. She later studied drama in Vancouver, Canada, and gained recognition for her role as Xena in the series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, which led to her iconic portrayal of the character in the spin-off series Xena: Warrior Princess, debuting in 1995. The character quickly became a cultural phenomenon, earning Lawless a dedicated fan base and significant acclaim. Beyond Xena, she showcased her versatility in roles such as D'Anna Biers in Battlestar Galactica and Lucretia in Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Since 2019, she has starred as Alexa in the series My Life Is Murder.

Personal Life

Lawless's personal life has been marked by both triumph and challenge. She became a mother at a young age, marrying Garth Lawless in 1988, but the couple divorced in 1995. In 1998, she married Robert Tapert, the executive producer of Xena, and they have two sons together. Lawless has openly discussed her struggles with bulimia during her youth, emphasizing her journey to overcome the illness. Her contributions to entertainment and the community were recognized in 2004 when she was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
