Early Life
Emmanuel N'Djoké "Manu" Dibango was born on December 12, 1933, in Douala, Cameroon. He was the son of Michel Manfred N'Djoké Dibango, a civil servant, and a fashion designer mother. Growing up in a multicultural environment, Dibango faced the complexities of his mixed heritage, belonging to both the Yabassi and Douala ethnic groups. His early education included attending Protestant church services, where he developed a passion for music. By 1941, he was accepted into a colonial school, where he learned French and honed his artistic talents.

Dibango's musical journey began in French jazz clubs before he moved to Belgium, where he caught the attention of Joseph Kabasele, a prominent figure in the Congolese music scene. Joining Kabasele's band, Le Grand Kallé et l'African Jazz, he became a key player in the African Jazz movement. His career took off with the release of his iconic 1972 single "Soul Makossa," which is celebrated as one of the most sampled African songs in history. Throughout his career, Dibango collaborated with numerous renowned artists, including Fela Kuti and Herbie Hancock, and received accolades such as the Knight of the Legion of Honour and the All African Music Legend Award.
