Early Life

Marina Vlady was born on May 10, 1938, in Clichy, Hauts-de-Seine, France, to White Russian immigrant parents. Her father was an opera singer, and her mother was a dancer, which likely influenced her artistic inclinations from a young age. Vlady grew up in a family of performers, with her sisters, including actresses Odile Versois and Hélène Vallier, also pursuing careers in the arts. The sisters began acting as children and even explored ballet before branching out into their respective careers.

Career

Vlady's career as an actress and singer flourished in the 1960s and beyond. She gained significant recognition for her role in "The Conjugal Bed" (1963), for which she won the prestigious Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Her filmography includes notable works such as Jean-Luc Godard's "Two or Three Things I Know About Her" (1967) and Orson Welles' "Chimes at Midnight" (1966). In addition to her film work, Vlady was also active in television, appearing in the 1983 mini-series "La Chambre des Dames." Her artistic journey was marked by her collaborations with various record labels, including Le Chant du Monde and Barclay, showcasing her vocal talents.

Personal Life and Activism

Vlady's personal life was as vibrant as her career. She was married three times, including a notable union with Soviet poet and songwriter Vladimir Vysotsky from 1969 until his death in 1980. Their relationship inspired many of Vysotsky's songs, and Vlady wrote a memoir about their life together. A passionate advocate for social issues, she signed the Manifesto of the 343 in 1971, publicly declaring her abortion to support women's rights. Throughout her life, Vlady remained committed to various causes, including protesting against the deportation of Arab workers in France, reflecting her dedication to activism alongside her artistic pursuits.
