Early Life

Stanley Kirk Burrell, better known as MC Hammer, was born on March 30, 1962, in Oakland, California. Growing up in a modest household with his mother, a secretary, and his father, a professional poker player, Hammer was one of nine siblings living in a cramped three-bedroom apartment. His early exposure to the world of sports came when he worked as a bat boy for the Oakland Athletics, where he showcased his energetic personality and dance skills, earning the nickname "Hammer" from Reggie Jackson.

Career

MC Hammer's music career began with the formation of a Christian rap group alongside singer Jon Gibson. His debut album, "Feel My Power," was released in 1986, followed by the re-release "Let’s Get It Started" in 1988. Hammer's breakthrough came with his third album, "Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ’Em," which included the iconic hit "U Can't Touch This." Known for his flashy dance moves and signature Hammer pants, he became a pop culture phenomenon in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Hammer's influence extended beyond music as he became a successful entrepreneur and a celebrity spokesperson, recognized as a pioneering innovator of pop rap.

Hammer married Stephanie in 1985, and together they have five children. Despite achieving immense wealth, including a peak net worth of approximately $33 million, he faced financial difficulties and filed for bankruptcy in 1996. Hammer has remained active in technology, investing in several companies and engaging with fans through social media. He is also known for his philanthropic efforts and political activism, including support for the SAFE California Act, which aimed to abolish the death penalty in the state.
