Биография
Early Life
Michael Praetorius, born Michael Schultze on February 15, 1571, in Creuzburg, Thuringia, was the youngest son of a Lutheran pastor. He received a comprehensive education, attending schools in Torgau and Zerbst before studying divinity and philosophy at the University of Frankfurt (Oder). Praetorius was not only musically gifted but also fluent in several languages, which would serve him well in his future endeavors.
Career
Praetorius began his musical career in 1587 as the organist at the Marienkirche in Frankfurt. By 1592, he had moved to the court of Wolfenbüttel, where he served under Henry Julius, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. His role evolved from organist to Kapellmeister (court music director) by 1604. His first compositions emerged around 1602/3, showcasing a blend of German Protestant chorale style and new Italian performance practices, which established him as a significant composer of his time. Notably, his collection "Musae Sioniae" (1605–10) and various liturgical works published in 1611 reflect his dedication to the Protestant musical tradition.
Later Years and Legacy
After the death of Duke Henry Julius in 1613, Praetorius continued his work in Wolfenbüttel under Frederick Ulrich while also contributing to the court of John George I, Elector of Saxony in Dresden. His contributions to music, particularly in the development of forms based on Protestant hymns, have left a lasting impact on the musical landscape. Praetorius passed away on February 15, 1621, leaving behind a rich legacy of compositions that continue to be celebrated today.
