Early Life

Michel Jean Legrand was born on February 24, 1932, in Paris, France, into a musical family. His father, Raymond Legrand, was a conductor and composer, while his mother, Marcelle Der-Mikaëlian, was related to conductor Jacques Hélian. Legrand's early exposure to music led him to study at the Conservatoire de Paris from the age of 11, where he honed his skills under the guidance of notable instructors, including Nadia Boulanger.

Career

Legrand's career took off at the young age of 22 when his 1954 album "I Love Paris" became a surprise hit. He became a prolific composer, creating over 200 film and television scores, and gained international recognition for his work with jazz legends like Miles Davis and Stan Getz. His collaborations with French New Wave director Jacques Demy on films such as "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" (1964) and "The Young Girls of Rochefort" (1967) solidified his status in the film industry. Legrand won three Academy Awards for his compositions, including the iconic song "The Windmills of Your Mind" from "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968).

Legacy

Throughout his illustrious career, Legrand received numerous accolades, including three Oscars, five Grammys, and a BAFTA Award.
