Mindless Self Indulgence

Formation

Mindless Self Indulgence (MSI) is an American electropunk band formed in New York City in 1997. The band's origins trace back to the musical explorations of lead vocalist Jimmy Urine, who recorded around 35 songs between 1987 and 1996, often experimenting with industrial and electronic punk styles. The band officially came together when Urine was joined by guitarist Steve, Righ?, and drummer Kitty, along with bassist Vanessa Y.T., who was later replaced by Lyn-Z. This lineup established the eclectic sound that MSI is known for, blending punk rock, electronica, and hip-hop influences.

Key Releases and Tours

MSI quickly gained attention for their unique sound and energetic performances. They released their self-titled debut album, "Mindless Self‐Indulgence," followed by several notable albums including "Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy," "You'll Rebel to Anything," and "Pink." The band has also produced a variety of EPs and remix albums, showcasing their diverse musical style. In 2007, they toured as part of the Revolution Stage of Projekt Revolution, hosted by Linkin Park, and headlined the Kerrang! Relentless Energy Drink tour in 2009.

Legacy

Rather than adhering to traditional record contracts, MSI has opted to license their music, allowing them to retain ownership of their work. Their innovative approach and genre-blending style have influenced a range of artists in the alternative rock and electronic scenes. In addition to their music, MSI has ventured into comic books, releasing "Adventures Into Mindless Self Indulgence" in 2010, which chronicles their tour experiences and significant moments in their career. With a lineup that has remained stable since its formation, MSI continues to be a vibrant force in the music industry.
