Formation

Morbid Angel, an iconic American death metal band, was formed in 1983 in Tampa, Florida, by guitarist Trey Azagthoth and drummer/vocalist Mike Browning. Initially named Ice, the band briefly changed its name to Heretic before settling on Morbid Angel due to another band with the same name. The early lineup also included bassist Dallas Ward, who contributed to the band's initial sound before being replaced by David Vincent in 1986. The band quickly gained a reputation for their intense performances and gruesome stage antics, becoming a pivotal force in the Florida death metal scene.

Breakthrough

The band's debut album, "Altars of Madness," released in 1989, is hailed as one of the most significant death metal albums of all time. This was followed by other classic releases such as "Blessed Are the Sick" (1991) and "Covenant" (1993), which solidified their status in the genre. Morbid Angel was the first death metal band to achieve mainstream success, thanks in part to their signing with Giant Records in 1992 and heavy rotation of their music videos on MTV. The music video for "God of Emptiness" even featured on an episode of Beavis and Butt-Head, further propelling their visibility.

Morbid Angel's influence on the death metal genre is profound, inspiring countless bands such as Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, and Nile.
