Natalie Merchant

Early Life

Natalie Merchant was born on October 26, 1963, in Jamestown, New York, as the third of four children to Anthony and Anne Merchant. Her family background is rich in musical influence, with her paternal grandfather being a musician who emigrated from Sicily. Growing up in a Roman Catholic household, Merchant's early exposure to music came from her mother, who encouraged her children to study music while limiting their television consumption. This nurturing environment led to her appreciation for various genres, from classical to jazz, although she did not discover iconic artists like Bob Dylan until her late teens.

Career

Merchant's musical journey began in earnest when she joined the band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981 while still a student. As the lead vocalist and primary lyricist, she contributed to the band's first seven albums, achieving significant success, including their highest-charting song, "Because the Night," during an MTV Unplugged performance. In 1993, seeking more creative control, she left the band to pursue a solo career. Her debut solo album, "Tigerlily," released in 1995, was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, featuring hits like "Beloved Wife."

Personal Life and Activism

Merchant's personal life has been marked by significant relationships, including a friendship and romance with Michael Stipe of R.E.M. She married Daniel de la Calle in 2003 and has a daughter named Lucia. An advocate for various causes, Merchant has organized concerts against fracking and domestic violence, and she actively participates in campaigns against racism. Despite facing health challenges, including surgery for a serious condition in 2019, she continues to inspire through her music and activism, teaching arts and crafts to underprivileged children in New York.
