Early Life

Neil Sedaka was born on March 13, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, to a family with rich cultural roots. His father, Mordechai "Mac" Sedaka, was a taxi driver of Lebanese Jewish descent, while his mother, Eleanor Appel, was of Polish and Russian Jewish heritage. Growing up in the Brighton Beach neighborhood, Sedaka developed a passion for music early on, demonstrating his talent in a second-grade choral class. His mother supported his musical aspirations by working to afford piano lessons, and he later earned a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music's Preparatory Division for Children.

Career

Sedaka's music career began in 1957 when he formed a band called the Linc-Tones with his classmates. After leaving the group, he launched a solo career that quickly gained momentum. His first major hit, "The Diary," reached the top 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1958, marking the start of a prolific career. Over the years, Sedaka sold millions of records and wrote or co-wrote over 500 songs, collaborating with notable lyricists like Howard Greenfield and Phil Cody. His musical style spanned various genres, including pop, rock and roll, and soft rock, and he became known for hits like "Calendar Girl" and "Laughter in the Rain."

Personal Life and Legacy

In 1962, Sedaka married Leba Strassberg, with whom he had two children. He remained active in the music industry throughout his life, earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and releasing numerous albums, including "Solitaire" and "The Hungry Years." Sedaka passed away on February 27, 2026, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy as a beloved American singer and songwriter. His contributions to music continue to resonate, showcasing his enduring influence in the industry.
