Nino Manfredi

Early Life

Saturnino "Nino" Manfredi was born on March 22, 1921, in Castro dei Volsci, Frosinone, Italy, into a humble farming family. His father, who served in Public Safety, moved the family to Rome in the early 1930s. Nino faced a serious health crisis in 1937 when he contracted bilateral pleurisy, leading to a lengthy hospitalization where he discovered his passion for music by playing a self-made banjo in the hospital band. Although he initially enrolled in law school to please his family, he soon gravitated towards the performing arts, making his stage debut in 1947.

Career

Manfredi's career spanned several decades, during which he became a prominent figure in Italian cinema and theater. He worked with notable directors and was involved in various artistic endeavors, including acting, directing, and screenwriting. His contributions to film earned him numerous accolades, including multiple David di Donatello awards for Best Actor and Best Script, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also recognized with the Flaiano Prize and the Nastro d'Argento for his outstanding performances.

Personal Life

Nino Manfredi was married to model Erminia Ferrari from 1955 until his death in 2004. The couple had three children, including a son, Luca, who followed in his father's footsteps as a director. Manfredi was known for his strict dietary habits due to a biliary disorder and was an active volunteer, serving as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF in 1991. He was an atheist and maintained a strong connection to his roots throughout his life.

Legacy

Manfredi's impact on Italian culture is commemorated through various honors, including an asteroid named after him and the establishment of the Nino Manfredi Prize at the Nastro d’Argento Awards. His legacy continues to be celebrated, with retrospectives and events held in his honor, including a biographical film directed by his son in 2017, showcasing his early years and artistic journey.
