Биография
Early Life and Career
Omara Portuondo Peláez was born on October 29, 1930, in the vibrant Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Havana, Cuba. Growing up in a family with a rich cultural background, her mother, Esperanza Peláez, was from a wealthy Spanish family and made headlines by marrying a black professional baseball player, Bartolo Portuondo. Omara, alongside her three sisters, was immersed in music and dance from a young age. She joined the Cabaret Tropicana's dance group in 1950, following her elder sister Haydee, and performed in various dance troupes, including the Mulatas de Fuego. In 1947, she and Haydee became part of the Loquibambia Swing, a group led by the blind pianist Frank Emilio Flynn.
In the early 1950s, Portuondo's career took off as she sang for the Orquesta Anacaona and later joined the renowned vocal group Cuarteto d'Aida in 1953. This group, directed by pianist Aida Diestro, achieved significant success, performing alongside legends like Nat King Cole and recording an album for RCA Victor in 1957. Her solo career began with the release of "Magia Negra," a groundbreaking album that fused jazz with Cuban music.
Artistic Development and Achievements
Throughout her illustrious career, Portuondo has collaborated with many notable Cuban musicians, including Julio Gutiérrez and Chucho Valdés. She is primarily celebrated for her bolero renditions but has explored a diverse range of musical styles, from jazz to son cubano. Since 1996, she has been an integral part of the Buena Vista Social Club project, which has allowed her to tour extensively and record multiple albums, further solidifying her status in the music world.
Her contributions to music have not gone unnoticed; she has received numerous accolades, including the Latin Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Tropical Album in 2009 and the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. In 2023, she won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Album, showcasing her enduring talent and influence in the industry. Portuondo continues to inspire audiences with her powerful voice and rich musical heritage.
