Early Life
Oscar Emmanuel Peterson was born on August 15, 1925, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, to West Indian immigrants. His father, Daniel, was an amateur musician and a porter for the Canadian Pacific Railway, while his mother, Kathleen, worked as a domestic worker. Growing up in the predominantly black neighborhood of Little Burgundy, Peterson was immersed in jazz culture from a young age. He began playing the trumpet and piano at five, but after a bout of tuberculosis at seven, he focused solely on the piano. His early training included classical studies under his sister Daisy and Hungarian pianist Paul de Marky, leading him to develop a unique style that blended classical and jazz influences.
Career
Peterson's career took off in the late 1940s when he was introduced to the New York jazz scene by Norman Granz, who became his manager. He formed the Oscar Peterson Trio, which gained acclaim for its innovative performances. Over his 60-year career, Peterson released more than 200 recordings and won eight Grammy Awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He was known for his virtuosic technique and was affectionately dubbed the "Maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington. His collaborations with other jazz legends, including Louis Armstrong and Ben Webster, further solidified his status in the jazz community.
Personal Life
Throughout his life, Peterson was married four times and had seven children. He was passionate about teaching and founded the Advanced School of Contemporary Music in Toronto during the 1960s. Despite his struggles with weight and smoking, he maintained a love for cooking and remained active in the music scene until his passing on December 23, 2007. Peterson's legacy as one of the greatest jazz pianists endures, celebrated for his contributions to the genre and his influence on future generations of musicians.

Oscar Emmanuel Peterson was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. As a virtuoso who is considered to be one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, Peterson released more than 200 recordings, won eight Grammy Awards, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy, and received numerous other awards and honours. He played thousands of concerts worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years. He was called the "Maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington, simply "O.P." by his friends, and was informally known in the jazz community as "the King of inside swing".
