Peggy Lipton

Early Life

Margaret Ann Lipton was born on August 30, 1946, in New York City to an upper middle-class Jewish family. Her mother, Rita Benson, was an artist, and her father, Harold Lipton, was a corporate lawyer. Growing up in Lawrence, Long Island, Lipton faced challenges, including a severe stutter and the trauma of sexual abuse by an uncle. Despite these difficulties, she pursued her passion for the arts, moving to Los Angeles in 1964, where she embraced a free-spirited lifestyle as a "Topanga Canyon hippie" exploring meditation and yoga.

Career

Lipton's career began in modeling, with her father arranging her first jobs in New York. By 15, she was a model for the Ford Agency. After moving to Los Angeles, she signed with Universal Pictures and made her television debut in 1965. Lipton gained fame for her role as Julie Barnes in the iconic series "The Mod Squad" (1968-1973), where she was nominated for four Emmy Awards and won a Golden Globe in 1970. Her portrayal of a vulnerable undercover cop made her a fashion icon of the era. After a 15-year hiatus from full-time acting, she returned to the screen in 1988 and later starred in David Lynch's acclaimed series "Twin Peaks."

Personal Life

Lipton's personal life was marked by her marriage to musician and producer Quincy Jones in 1974, with whom she had two daughters, Kidada and Rashida, both of whom became actresses. The couple separated in 1986 and divorced in 1990. Throughout her life, Lipton battled depression and substance use, but she remained a beloved figure in both the music and television industries until her passing in 2019.
