Early Life

Moriah Rose Pereira, known professionally as Poppy, was born on January 1, 1995, in Boston, Massachusetts. At the age of 14, she moved with her family to Nashville, where she initially aspired to be a Rockette, taking dance lessons for 11 years. However, after facing bullying at school for being quiet and skinny, she transitioned to homeschooling and ultimately decided to pursue a career in music. In 2013, at 18, she relocated to Los Angeles to chase her dreams.

Career

Poppy's career began in earnest with her first performance at IndieCove in August 2011, where she covered an Alanis Morissette song. She launched her YouTube channel, ThatPoppyTV, in October 2011, and gained attention for her surreal performance art videos that satirized internet culture. Collaborating with director Titanic Sinclair, she created a series of abstract videos that showcased her unique artistic vision. Her music career took off with the release of her debut album, "Poppy.Computer," in 2017, followed by several other albums, including "Am I a Girl?" and "I Disagree." Poppy's genre-blending style incorporates elements of electropop, pop metal, and industrial music, showcasing her versatility as an artist.

Personal Life

Poppy's personal life has been as colorful as her music. She began dating rapper Ghostemane in October 2019, and they were briefly engaged in July 2020 before separating in late 2021. Her 2018 album "Am I a Girl?" was inspired by her gender questioning, which she later clarified, stating, "I am a girl, but I believe everyone should be able to identify with whatever they choose." Poppy has a deep admiration for Japanese culture, having performed in Japan and incorporated the language into her music. She has also revealed her dedication to learning Japanese, having taken lessons for four years.
