Formation

Porcupine Tree, an English progressive rock band, was formed in 1987 by musician Steven Wilson and collaborator Malcolm Stocks. Initially conceived as a hoax project, the duo created a fictional backstory for a legendary band named The Porcupine Tree, complete with fabricated members and album titles. Wilson, who was also involved in another project called No-Man, began to take the music of Porcupine Tree seriously by 1989, leading to the release of the cassette "Tarquin's Seaweed Farm".

Breakthrough and Key Releases

The band's lineup solidified in the early 1990s with the addition of Chris Maitland, Colin Edwin, and Richard Barbieri. They released several influential albums, including "The Sky Moves Sideways" and "Signify", which helped establish their reputation in the progressive rock scene. Their sound evolved over the years, incorporating elements of psychedelic rock and progressive metal, culminating in critically acclaimed works like "In Absentia" and "Fear of a Blank Planet". Gavin Harrison joined the band in 2002, further enhancing their musical complexity.
