Ravi Shankar

Early Life

Pandit Ravi Shankar was born on April 7, 1920, in Benares (now Varanasi), India, into a Bengali Hindu family as the youngest of seven brothers. His father, Shyam Shankar Chowdhury, was a barrister and politician, while his mother, Hemangini Devi, came from a prosperous landlord family. Shankar's early life was marked by a significant separation from his father, who worked in London, leaving his mother to raise him. At the age of 10, he joined his brother Uday Shankar's dance troupe and toured Europe, where he began to learn various Indian instruments and dance forms.

Career

After returning to India, Shankar dedicated himself to mastering Indian classical music under the tutelage of the renowned musician Allauddin Khan. He made his public debut on the sitar in 1939 and quickly became a prominent figure in Indian classical music. Shankar's innovative style combined traditional Hindustani music with influences from Carnatic music, and he was known for his unique performances that often included the tabla. Throughout his career, he composed music for films, founded the Indian National Orchestra, and introduced new ragas, solidifying his status as a leading sitar virtuoso.

Legacy

Ravi Shankar's contributions to music earned him numerous accolades, including India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999. He was also a father to two notable musicians, Norah Jones and Anoushka Shankar. His influence extended beyond India, as he played a pivotal role in popularizing Indian classical music worldwide, collaborating with various international artists. Shankar passed away on December 11, 2012, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire musicians globally.
