Биография
Early Life
Raymond Matthews Brown was born on October 13, 1926, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He began his musical journey with piano lessons as a child but switched to the upright bass after a vacancy opened in his high school jazz orchestra. Influenced by the legendary bassist Jimmy Blanton, Brown quickly became dedicated to his craft, often taking the school bass home for practice. His commitment to music was evident, as he graduated high school in 1944, already making a name for himself in the local jazz scene.
Career
Brown's career took off when he moved to New York City at the age of 20, where he joined Dizzy Gillespie's band. His time with Gillespie from 1946 to 1951 allowed him to collaborate with jazz greats like Art Tatum and Charlie Parker. In 1947, he married singer Ella Fitzgerald, and they adopted a child together. After their divorce in 1953, Brown continued to thrive in the jazz world, becoming a key member of the Oscar Peterson Trio from 1951 to 1965. His contributions to jazz were significant, as he also played with the Modern Jazz Quartet, which emerged from his collaborations with other musicians.
Legacy
Ray Brown's impact on jazz was recognized through numerous accolades, including an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music in 1995 and induction into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame in 2003. He received a Grammy for his composition "Gravy Waltz," which became the theme for The Steve Allen Show. Brown's legacy as a pioneering jazz bassist endures, celebrated for his artistry and influence in the genre until his passing in 2002.
