Early Life

Richard Charles Rodgers was born on June 28, 1902, in Queens, New York, into a Jewish family. His father, William Abrahams Rodgers, was a prominent physician who had changed the family name from Rogazinsky. From a young age, Rodgers showed a talent for music, beginning piano lessons at six. He attended several schools, including P.S. 166 and DeWitt Clinton High School, and spent summers at Camp Wigwam in Maine, where he composed some of his first songs. He later studied at Columbia University and the Institute of Musical Art, now known as Juilliard, where he was influenced by notable composers like Victor Herbert and Jerome Kern.

Career

Rodgers's professional career began in 1919 when he partnered with lyricist Lorenz Hart. Their breakthrough came in 1925 with the song "Manhattan" from the show "The Garrick Gaieties," which established them as a leading songwriting duo on Broadway. Over the years, they produced numerous hits, including shows like "Dearest Enemy" and "A Connecticut Yankee." After Hart's passing, Rodgers teamed up with Oscar Hammerstein II, creating iconic musicals such as "Oklahoma!" and "The Sound of Music." Throughout his career, Rodgers composed 43 Broadway musicals and over 900 songs, significantly influencing American music.

Personal Life

In 1930, Rodgers married Dorothy Belle Feiner, and they had two daughters, Mary and Linda, both of whom pursued careers in music. Despite his professional success, Rodgers faced personal challenges, including struggles with depression and alcohol abuse. He passed away on December 30, 1979, at the age of 77, after battling cancer and other health issues. His legacy endures through his timeless music and the numerous awards he received, including a Pulitzer Prize and multiple Tony Awards.

Legacy

Rodgers's contributions to musical theater were recognized posthumously, with the renaming of the 46th Street Theatre to the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 1990. His centennial in 2002 was celebrated worldwide, and he remains a revered figure in American music history, honored with various awards and recognitions, including a place in the American Theater Hall of Fame.
