Slick Rick

Early Life

Ricky Martin Lloyd Walters, known professionally as Slick Rick, was born on January 14, 1965, in Mitcham, London, to Jamaican parents. Tragically, he lost sight in his right eye due to an accident with broken glass as an infant, which led to his iconic eye patch. In 1976, his family immigrated to the United States, settling in the Bronx, New York City. Slick Rick attended the Fiorello H. Laguardia High School of Music & Art, where he majored in visual art and formed the Kangol Crew with fellow student Dana Dane, performing in local contests and clubs.

Career

Slick Rick's career took off in 1985 when he joined Doug E. Fresh's Get Fresh Crew, initially performing under the name MC Ricky D. His breakout singles, "The Show" and "La Di Da Di," showcased his unique storytelling ability and became hip-hop classics. In 1986, he signed with Def Jam Records, releasing his debut album, "The Great Adventures of Slick Rick," in 1988. The album was a commercial success, reaching No. 1 on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart and featuring hits like "Children's Story" and "Mona Lisa." Slick Rick is celebrated for his narrative style, often regarded as hip-hop's greatest storyteller, with critics praising his ability to weave humor and detail into his lyrics.
