Early Life

Helen Folasade Adu, known professionally as Sade Adu, was born on January 16, 1959, in Ibadan, Nigeria. Her name, Folasade, translates to "crowned with wealth" in Yoruba, reflecting her rich cultural heritage. Sade's parents, Adebisi Adu, a Nigerian lecturer, and Anne Hayes, an English district nurse, separated when she was just four years old. Following the separation, Sade and her brother returned to England with their mother, where they lived with their maternal grandparents. Sade later moved to Holland-on-Sea and completed her education at Clacton County High School and Colchester Institute before pursuing fashion design at Saint Martin's School of Art.

Career

Sade's musical journey began after she completed her fashion studies, initially singing backup for the British band Pride. It was during this time that she formed a songwriting partnership with Pride's guitarist, Stuart Matthewman. Their collaboration led to the formation of the band Sade in 1983, which quickly gained popularity. Their debut album, "Diamond Life," released on July 16, 1984, was a commercial success, reaching number two in the UK Album Chart and selling over 1.2 million copies in the UK alone. Sade's unique blend of soul, jazz, and soft rock, combined with her distinctive voice, has made her one of the most successful British female artists in history.

Personal Life

Sade's personal life has been as intriguing as her music career. She married Spanish film director Carlos Pliego in 1989, but the marriage ended in 1995. Sade has a son, Izaak Theo Adu, born in 1996, who later came out as a transgender man. Sade has been in a long-term relationship with Ian Watts since 2007. Despite her fame, she maintains a private life, rarely giving interviews and residing in a renovated cottage in Gloucestershire while keeping a Georgian house in North London for business purposes.

Sade's influence on contemporary music is profound, with her voice described as a "grainy contralto" that resonates deeply with listeners.
