Биография

Early Life

Samuel Cohen, known professionally as Sammy Cahn, was born on June 18, 1913, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. He was the only son of Jewish immigrants Abraham and Elka Reiss Cohen, and he grew up with four sisters. Despite his mother's disapproval of him studying piano, Cahn took violin lessons and eventually joined a small dixieland band called Pals of Harmony after his bar mitzvah. This marked the beginning of his journey into music, which diverged from his parents' hopes for him to pursue a more traditional profession.

Career

Cahn's career as a lyricist and songwriter flourished as he became known for his romantic lyrics in films and Broadway songs. He collaborated with notable artists, including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Doris Day, producing a series of hit recordings. Cahn's work earned him significant acclaim, including four Academy Awards for Best Original Song, with one of his most famous hits being "Three Coins in the Fountain." His ability to blend vaudeville influences into his songwriting became a hallmark of his style.

Legacy

Throughout his illustrious career, Cahn was nominated for 31 Academy Awards and received numerous accolades, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Theatre World Special Award. In 1988, the Sammy Film Music Awards were established in his honor, recognizing his contributions to film music. Cahn's legacy continues through initiatives like the High Hopes Fund, which supports children with diabetes and research into the disease, reflecting his commitment to giving back to the community. He passed away on January 15, 1993, leaving behind a rich musical heritage that continues to inspire artists today.
