Sir John Gielgud was born on April 14, 1904, in South Kensington, London, into a family with deep theatrical roots. He was the third of four children in the Gielgud family, with his father, Frank Henry Gielgud, being of Lithuanian and Polish descent. His mother, Kate Terry-Gielgud, was part of the renowned Terry theatrical dynasty. Gielgud's early exposure to the arts came from his family's connections, and he began his acting career as a junior member of his cousin's company in 1922 after studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

Career

Gielgud's illustrious career spanned eight decades, during which he became a prominent figure in British theatre. He established himself at the Old Vic as a master of Shakespearean roles between 1929 and 1931. His contributions to the arts were not limited to the stage; he also lent his voice to numerous recordings, including notable albums such as "Sir John Gielgud reads Alice In Wonderland" and "Film Music, Vol. 1: Hamlet / As You Like It." Sir Arthur John Gielgud was an English actor and theatre director whose career spanned eight decades. He and his contemporaries Laurence Olivier, Michael Redgrave and Ralph Richardson made up a quartet of male actors who dominated the British stage of the mid-20th century. A member of the Terry family theatrical dynasty, he gained his first paid acting work as a junior member of his cousin Phyllis Neilson-Terry's company in 1922. After studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), he worked in repertory theatre and in the West End before establishing himself at the Old Vic as an exponent of Shakespeare in 1929–31.
