St. Gregory of Nareg

Early Life

St. Gregory of Narek, also known as Grigor Narekatsi, was born around 945 in a village on the southern shores of Lake Van, in what is now eastern Turkey. He hailed from a notable family; his father, Khosrov Andzevatsi, was a bishop and a relative of the Artsruni royal family. Tragically, Gregory's mother passed away when he was young, and his father was later excommunicated for his controversial beliefs regarding the rank of Catholicos in the Armenian Church. Gregory and his elder brother Hovhannes were sent to the Narekavank monastery for their education, where they were taught by Anania Narekatsi, Gregory's maternal great-uncle and the monastery's founder.

Career

Gregory of Narek became a prominent Armenian mystical and lyrical poet, monk, and theologian. His literary contributions, particularly in narrative poetry, have had a profound impact on Armenian literature. He is best known for his work, the "Book of Lamentations," which is revered in both the Armenian Apostolic and Catholic Churches. His influence on Armenian literature is often compared to that of Homer for Greek literature and Dante for Italian literature. Gregory was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Francis in 2015, highlighting his significant theological contributions.

Legacy

Gregory's literary legacy is immense, influencing countless Armenian poets throughout history, including medieval figures like Hovhannes Imastaser and modern poets such as Hovhannes Tumanyan and Yeghishe Charents. His works continue to resonate in Armenian culture, with the name "Narek" becoming a common male first name, reflecting his lasting impact on Armenian identity and literature. Gregory of Narek passed away around 1003, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire generations.
