Sufjan Stevens

Early Life

Sufjan Stevens was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1975 and spent his early years there before moving to Alanson, Michigan, at the age of nine. Raised by his father, Rasjid, and stepmother, Pat, he had limited contact with his mother, Carrie, who lived in Oregon. Stevens, of Lithuanian and Greek descent, was given the name Sufjan, an Islamic name of Arabic origin, by the founder of Subud, an interfaith spiritual community to which his parents belonged. He attended various schools, including the Detroit Waldorf School and Interlochen Arts Academy, and graduated from Harbor Light Christian School. He later earned a degree from Hope College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, and an MFA in Creative Writing from The New School in New York City.

Career

Stevens began his musical journey in the mid-1990s as a member of the folk-rock band Marzuki and the garage band Con Los Dudes. His debut solo album, "A Sun Came," was released in 2000 on his own label, Asthmatic Kitty. He followed this with several critically acclaimed albums, including "Michigan," "Illinois," and "The Age of Adz," showcasing his unique blend of indie folk, alternative rock, and baroque pop. Stevens is known for his multi-instrumental talents, often incorporating the banjo, oboe, and piano into his music. His work frequently explores themes of love, religion, and grief, though he prefers to keep his spiritual beliefs private.

Personal Life

In recent years, Stevens has resided in Upstate New York, having previously lived in New York City for two decades. He is a practicing Christian and has been open about his sexuality, particularly following the death of his partner, Evans Richardson, in April 2023. In September 2023, Stevens was diagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome, which led to hospitalization and rehabilitation. He dedicated his latest album, "Javelin," to Richardson, marking a poignant moment in his personal and artistic journey.
