Sum 41, a Canadian punk rock band, was formed in Ajax, Ontario, in 1996. The band's origins trace back to a previous group called Kaspir, founded by Deryck Whibley and Grant McVittie in 1994. After several lineup changes, including the addition of drummer Steve Jocz, the band decided to rebrand as Sum 41, a name inspired by the number of days into their summer break when they first performed at the Warped Tour. Their debut performance under this name took place during Supernova's Battle of the Bands on September 28, 1996, featuring Whibley, Jocz, McVittie, and Jon Marshall.
