Tate McRae

Early Life

Tate Rosner McRae was born on July 1, 2003, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, coinciding with Canada Day. She is the daughter of Tanja Rosner, a German dance instructor, and Todd McRae, a lawyer with Scottish ancestry. At the age of two, her family moved to Oman due to her father's job, where she lived for three years and attended The American International School Muscat. McRae began her dance training at six and returned to Calgary at eight, where she intensified her training and competed with Drewitz Dance Productions. By age 11, she was training in various dance styles at YYC Dance Project, a company owned by her mother, and also studied ballet at the School of Alberta Ballet. She graduated online from Western Canada High School in 2021.

Career

Tate McRae's career took off when she gained recognition as a contestant on the reality show "So You Think You Can Dance" in 2016, where she made history by placing third, the highest for a Canadian contestant. She signed with RCA Records in 2019 and released her EPs "All the Things I Never Said" in 2020 and "Too Young to Be Sad" in 2021, the latter becoming the most streamed female EP of that year on Spotify. Her breakout single, "You Broke Me First," marked her entry into the US Billboard Hot 100. McRae's music blends pop, alternative pop, and dance-pop, drawing influences from artists like Lana Del Rey and Ariana Grande. She has been praised for her honest lyrics and impressive vocals, establishing herself as a significant figure in contemporary pop music.

Personal Life and Activism

In her personal life, McRae was in a relationship with NHL player Cole Sillinger from late 2021 to early 2023. She later began dating Australian rapper the Kid Laroi, with whom she collaborated on the song "I Know Love". McRae is also known for her activism, particularly in support of LGBTQ+ rights, and has contributed to organizations like The Trevor Project through her merchandise campaigns. She values the input of LGBTQ+ members in her creative team and prefers to express her values through her actions rather than public statements.
