Биография
Formation
The Dave Clark Five, also known as the DC5, were formed in 1958 in Tottenham, London, initially as backing musicians for vocalist Stan Saxon. The lineup included drummer Dave Clark and guitarist Rick Huxley. After parting ways with Saxon, they reformed as a standalone band in January 1962, solidifying their lineup with Clark on drums, Huxley on bass, Lenny Davidson on lead guitar, Denis Payton on saxophone and harmonica, and Mike Smith on keyboards and lead vocals.
Breakthrough
The DC5 gained prominence with their first UK top-ten single, "Glad All Over," in January 1964, which famously knocked The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" off the top of the UK Singles Chart. They achieved further success in the US, reaching No. 1 in December 1965 with their cover of Bobby Day's "Over and Over." Their energetic sound, characterized by Clark's punchy drumming and Smith's powerful vocals, helped define the "Tottenham Sound," a response to the Liverpool Mersey Beat phenomenon.
Legacy
The band disbanded in 1970 but left a lasting impact on the pop rock and beat music genres. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recognizing their influence and contributions to music. The DC5's discography includes notable albums such as "Glad All Over," "American Tour," and "The Dave Clark Five Return!" Their music continues to resonate, showcasing their role in shaping the sound of the 1960s.
