The Runaways

Formation

The Runaways were formed in 1975 in Los Angeles, spearheaded by rock producer Kim Fowley, who envisioned an all-female band at a time when female musicians were scarce. The initial lineup included Joan Jett, who was brought in by lyricist Kari Krome, and drummer Sandy West, whom Fowley discovered at the Rainbow Bar and Grill. The band made their live debut at the Whisky a Go Go in September 1975, quickly gaining attention as an all-girl answer to Grand Funk.

Key Releases and Lineup Changes

The Runaways released four studio albums and one live album during their brief career from 1975 to 1979. Their self-titled debut album, "The Runaways," was followed by notable releases such as "Queens of Noise" and "Waitin’ for the Night." The lineup saw changes, with bassist Micki Steele leaving shortly after their debut, and Lita Ford joining as lead guitarist. Despite their lack of major success in the U.S., they became a sensation in Japan, particularly with their hit single "Cherry Bomb."

Disbandment and Influence

The band disbanded in 1979, but their influence has endured, paving the way for future female artists and bands in the rock genre. The Runaways are credited with inspiring groups like the Bangles and the Go-Go's, and their legacy continues to resonate in the music industry today.
