Биография

Early Life

Thomas Campion was born on February 12, 1567, in London, England, to John Campion, a clerk of the Court of Chancery, and Lucy Searle. After the death of his father in 1576, his mother remarried, but she passed away shortly thereafter. His stepfather sent him to Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1581, where he studied for four years without obtaining a degree. In 1586, he began studying law at Gray's Inn but left in 1595 without being called to the bar. Campion later earned a medical degree from the University of Caen on February 10, 1605, and practiced as a physician in London until his death in March 1620.

Career

Campion was a multifaceted artist, known as an English composer, poet, and physician. He wrote over a hundred lute songs and masques for dancing, showcasing his talent in both music and poetry. His notable works include the famous poem "There Is a Garden in Her Face" and several albums such as "Elizabethan Lute Songs" and "Lute Songs." His contributions to music were significant, as he also authored a technical treatise on music, which further established his reputation in the field.

Legacy

Despite achieving considerable fame during his lifetime, Campion's works fell into obscurity after his death, largely due to the changing cultural landscape and the decline of the masque and song-book formats. His legacy was revived in the late 19th century when A. H. Bullen published a collection of his works in 1889, restoring his status among the foremost Elizabethan lyric poets. Campion's influence as a composer was recognized much later, and he is now celebrated for his lyrical contributions to classical music and poetry.
