Биография

Early Life

Thomas Moore was born on May 28, 1779, in Dublin, Ireland, to Anastasia Codd and John Moore, above their grocery shop on Aungier Street. He grew up with two younger sisters, Kate and Ellen, and displayed an early passion for music and performance, even staging musical plays with friends. Moore's education at Samuel Whyte's co-educational grammar school equipped him with a strong foundation in Latin, Greek, French, and Italian, leading to his first published poem at just fourteen in the "Anthologia Hibernica."

Career

Moore's literary journey took a significant turn when he became one of the first Catholics admitted to Trinity College Dublin in 1795, where he prepared for a career in law. However, his connections with influential figures like Robert Emmet and his involvement in the political climate of the time steered him towards writing. He gained fame as Ireland's "national bard" through his collection of "Irish Melodies," which set poignant verses to traditional Irish tunes, reflecting themes of dispossession and resistance. His romantic work, "Lalla Rookh," published in 1817, further solidified his reputation, earning him critical acclaim across Europe.

Travels and Legacy

In 1803, Moore took a government post in Bermuda but found the experience uninspiring, leading him to tour North America. His observations during this time, including a critical view of American society, influenced his later works. Moore's contributions to literature and music were recognized with the Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts order, and he remains celebrated as a key figure in European romanticism until his death on February 25, 1852. His legacy endures through his lyrical poetry and the cultural narratives he championed, making him a pivotal figure in Irish literature.

Извлечение из Википедии

Thomas Moore was an Irish writer, poet, and lyricist. Widely regarded in his lifetime as Ireland's "national bard", his fame and reputation rested primarily on the popularity of his Irish Melodies. In these, Moore set to old Irish tunes verses that spoke to a narrative of Irish dispossession, loss, and resistance. In his romantic work Lalla Rookh (1817), in which these same themes are explored in an elaborate orientalist allegory, Moore achieved wider critical recognition and popularity. Translated into several languages, and adapted and arranged for musical performance by, among others, Robert Schumann, the chivalric verse-narrative established Moore as one of the leading exemplars of European romanticism.
