Tim Conway

Early Life

Tim Conway, born Thomas Daniel Conway on December 15, 1933, in Willoughby, Ohio, grew up in Chagrin Falls. He was the son of Daniel, an Irish immigrant, and Sophia, a first-generation Romanian-American. Conway attended Bowling Green State University, where he majored in television and radio, and served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. He adopted the stage name "Tim" early in his career to distinguish himself from British actor Tom Conway.

Career

Conway's career took off after his military service when he began working in Cleveland television. He gained prominence through his quirky humor on KYW-TV and later on WJW-TV, where he created comedic skits. His big break came as a regular cast member on "The Carol Burnett Show" from 1975 to 1978, where he became known for his iconic characters like Mister Tudball and the Oldest Man. Over his illustrious career, Conway won five Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe, and he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999.

Personal Life

Conway was married to Mary Anne Dalton from 1961 until 1978, with whom he had six children. He later married Charlene Fusco in 1984, gaining a stepdaughter and expanding his family to seven children. Conway was also known for his philanthropic efforts, including fundraising performances in his hometown and serving as a spokesperson for the United Leukodystrophy Foundation. He returned to his Catholic faith later in life, sharing his journey in interviews and his memoir, "What's So Funny?: My Hilarious Life," which became a New York Times Best Seller.
