Early Life

Ernest Anthony Puente Jr., known as Tito Puente, was born on April 20, 1923, in Harlem, New York City, to Puerto Rican parents. Growing up in Spanish Harlem, he was introduced to music at a young age, initially taking piano lessons before switching to percussion. Influenced by jazz drummer Gene Krupa, Puente became a prodigy by the age of 13, performing with local bands and honing his skills in the vibrant music scene of his neighborhood.

Career

Puente's career took off after serving in the Navy during World War II, where he played in the ship's band. He later attended the Juilliard School of Music, which further shaped his unique style that blended Latin rhythms with jazz influences. Known as "El Rey de los Timbales," Puente became a prominent figure in the mambo and Latin jazz genres, releasing numerous albums such as "Mambo Caravan" and "Dance Mania." His innovative techniques on the timbales and vibraphone redefined these instruments in popular music.

Personal Life and Legacy

Puente was a devoted family man, with children who followed in his musical footsteps. He passed away on June 1, 2000, after a heart attack, leaving behind a rich legacy celebrated through numerous awards, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His contributions to music were recognized posthumously, with honors such as the naming of a street in Spanish Harlem after him and a commemorative postage stamp issued in his likeness. Tito Puente remains a beloved icon in the Latin music community, remembered for his vibrant performances and lasting impact on the genre.
