Early Life

Toni Michele Braxton was born on October 7, 1967, in Severn, Maryland, into a deeply religious family. Her father, Michael Conrad Braxton Sr., was a Methodist clergyman, while her mother, Evelyn Jackson, was a former opera singer and cosmetologist. Growing up as the eldest of six siblings, Braxton's musical journey began in the church choir, where she honed her vocal skills. Although she initially pursued a teaching degree at Bowie State University, her life took a turn when she was discovered by William E. Pettaway Jr. while singing at a gas station.

Career

Braxton's career took off in the late 1980s when she and her sisters formed the group The Braxtons, signing with Arista Records. However, it was her solo career that catapulted her to stardom. Her self-titled debut album, released in 1993, topped the US Billboard 200 and featured hits like "Another Sad Love Song" and "Breathe Again." Over the years, she released several successful albums, including "Secrets," "The Heat," and "Love, Marriage & Divorce," showcasing her distinctive contralto voice and versatility across genres such as R&B, soul, and contemporary music. Braxton has received numerous accolades, including seven Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2011.
