Early Life

Marcus Vinícius da Cruz e Mello Moraes, known as Vinícius de Moraes and affectionately nicknamed "O Poetinha," was born on October 19, 1913, in Gávea, a neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. He was the son of Clodoaldo da Silva Pereira Moraes, a public servant, and Lidia Cruz, a housewife and amateur pianist. His early education took place at Afrânio Peixoto Primary School, and he later attended St. Ignatius, a Jesuit high school, where he began to explore his passion for music and writing. By 1933, he graduated with a degree in Legal and Social Sciences from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, marking the beginning of his multifaceted career.

Career

Vinícius de Moraes was a prolific Brazilian composer, diplomat, lyricist, and playwright, whose contributions were pivotal in the development of bossa nova music. He collaborated with many notable artists, including Antônio Carlos Jobim, and recorded numerous albums throughout his career, such as "Os afro-sambas" and "Vinícius: Poesia e Canção." His work often blended poetry with music, showcasing his lyrical prowess. In the 1960s and 1970s, he partnered with Baden Powell to create the Afro sambas and collaborated with Toquinho, with whom he enjoyed a long-lasting musical partnership. Their performances were characterized by an intimate atmosphere, where Moraes would engage with the audience while sharing stories and songs.

Later Life and Legacy

Despite facing challenges, including a forced retirement from the Ministry of Foreign Relations in 1969, Moraes continued to create and perform music. He married three times and had a daughter, Maria, with his first wife. He passed away on July 9, 1980, at the age of 66, leaving behind a rich legacy. Posthumously, he was reinstated to the Brazilian diplomatic corps and promoted to ambassador. His influence remains strong, with tributes such as the naming of the 2016 Summer Olympics mascot after him and a Latin Grammy-winning album released in his honor in 2019.
